Department of Psychiatry

About US

The department of Psychiatry is committed to providing safe, ethical, and evidence-based mental health care with compassion and dedication. Our team consists of highly qualified psychiatrists, psychologists, and a social worker, all working together to implement a biopsychosocial model for assessment and treatment. We offer care in a 15-bed ward, staffed with experienced nurses specializing in mental health care. Our ongoing efforts focus on enhancing patient care and safety through continuous quality improvement initiatives.

We offer comprehensive treatment for a wide range of common mental health conditions, including mood disorders, schizophrenia, anxiety disorders, substance use disorders, and adjustment disorders, among others. Additionally, we offer routine clinical psychology services, including diagnostics, therapy, and teaching, and we run a Substance Use Disorders Clinic.

Our department plays a pivotal role in promoting mental well-being among undergraduate and postgraduate students at our Institution. We focus on enhancing mental health literacy, reducing stigma surrounding mental illness, and encouraging help-seeking behavior. We regularly conduct outreach programs and mental health awareness initiatives in the regional language, as well as mental health programs in schools.

Recently, the department has expanded as a postgraduate teaching center and developed both outpatient and inpatient services, now offering a robust MD (Psychiatry) program with an annual intake of three MD residents. We are committed to treating mental disorders and reducing their associated morbidity and mortality. We provide psychiatry training for MBBS students throughout their course. Additionally, the department plays an active role in psychiatric training for undergraduate nursing students and offers short-term training to postgraduate residents from other specialties.

All faculty members engage in continuing professional development to maintain their expertise in psychiatric practice, education, and research methodology. This includes presenting papers, attending conferences, and participating in workshops. Our department is also actively involved in research, including faculty-led projects, PG dissertations, and ICMR-STS initiatives. The department’s academic activities are diverse and comprehensive. We take a multidisciplinary approach to understanding the complexities of human behavior in both health and illness, and we strive to instill this approach in our training programs.
