About Us

Teaching and training in Forensic Medicine and Toxicology begin at the start of Phase II and continue through Phase III – Part I. The department’s primary responsibility is to educate undergraduate students about their medico-legal duties as physicians.

The curriculum includes both theoretical and practical instruction on various aspects of medico-legal responsibilities. The department is equipped with a modern mortuary block, capable of handling up to three autopsies simultaneously, including those for decomposed bodies. A cold chamber with a capacity for 15 bodies is also available for public use. The autopsy room features a gallery-style setup, allowing over 80 students to observe at once.

Students are trained in criminal matters and related medico-legal cases, where they learn to make observations and draw logical conclusions. They gain comprehensive knowledge of medico-legal cases (MLC), post-mortem (PM) procedures, and the legal aspects of medical practice, medical negligence, criminal law, and medical ethics. They are also trained to identify medico-legal concerns in hospital and general practice, and to understand post-mortem findings in cases of death caused by unnatural conditions or poisonings.

In addition, the department has a research lab, a well-organized museum, and provides round-the-clock medico-legal services. The department library is stocked with over 150 reference books for student use. The museum houses a rare collection of photographs and exhibits, including weapons, poisons, toxicological specimens, and skeletal remains, all carefully catalogued.

With its comprehensive resources and facilities, the department is fully equipped to provide thorough undergraduate training in Forensic Medicine and Toxicology, preparing students for the complexities of medico-legal practice.
